Partners
GaIN is proud to be a partner in many educational, health care and information
access programs:
- Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) are collaborations among
colleges, universities, federally funded community and migrant health
centers, public health departments, primary care centers and other sites
serving rural and other medically underserved populations. Grassroots
focused and community-based, AHEC initiatives are designed to increase
the recruitment, distribution and training of health care professionals
in underserved areas. The Georgia
Statewide AHEC Network is a partnership coordinated by the Medical
College of Georgia (MCG) and the Mercer
University School of Medicine. In addition to the GaIN members listed
below, Morehouse School of Medicine
also sponsors the Southeastern Primary Care Consortium (formerly the
Atlanta AHEC).
- Magnolia Coastlands AHEC
has been an active GaIN member since it was opened by Morehouse School
of Medicine in 1988 as The Georgia CHEP (Cooperative Health Manpower
Education Program. Serving 39 counties in central and southeast Georgia,
it maintains administrative offices in Dublin and Statesboro, and
is a recognized leader in the development and provision of continuing
education for the medical community. The Project INFORM (Information
for Rural Medicine) anticipates National Library of Medicine funding
in the near future.
- The Southwest Georgia (SOWEGA)
AHEC in Albany is administered through the Mercer University School
of Medicine. It serves 38 Georgia counties and has been in existence
since 1989.
- The Three Rivers AHEC in Columbus is
also administered by Mercer University School of Medicine and serves 28 counties in west central Georgia. It was established in 1994.
- The Blue Ridge AHEC
in Rome opened in 1997 is administered
by Medical College of Georgia. It provides services to 20 counties in northwest Geogia.
- The Foothills
AHEC, the newest Georgia AHEC center, is a non-profit regional
health education center based in Gainesville, Georgia. The mission
of Foothills AHEC is to increase the supply, distribution and education
of health professionals in northeast Georgia.
- Georgia's Rural Health Information Clearinghouse
(RHIC) is the result of a partnership between the
Georgia Department of Community Health's Office of Rural Health Services,
the Statewide AHEC Program and GaIN. The Clearinghouse provides an information
reference service for health care planners and providers as well as
others interested in Georgia rural health care delivery system issues.
