1. New Rural Health Research Website and Listserv

The Rural Health Research Gateway website at http://www.ruralhealthresearch.org provides easy and timely access to all of the research and findings of the eight Rural Health Research Centers funded by the federal Office of Rural Health Policy. Its intent is to help move new research findings of the Rural Health Research Centers to various end users as quickly and efficiently as possible. Users can browse by topic to find rural health publications and projects of interest. You can also subscribe to their new electronic discussion list at http://www.ruralhealthresearch.org//listserv/subscribe.php.

2. Rural Health Bookmark Available from CMS
-----------------------------

The Rural Health Bookmark, which offers Medicare providers, suppliers, and physicians information about rural educational resources, is now available in print format from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Medicare Learning Network. To place your order, visit www.cms.hhs.gov/mlngeninfo, scroll down to “Related Links Inside CMS,” and select “MLN Product Ordering Page.”

3. AHRQ Releases Patient Safety Toolkits for Providers
-----------------------------

An array of toolkits designed to help doctors, nurses, hospital managers, patients and others reduce medical errors has been released by the HHS Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The 17 toolkits, developed by AHRQ-funded experts who specialize in patient safety research, are free, publicly available, and can be adapted to most health care settings. The toolkits range from checklists to help reconcile medications when patients are discharged from the hospital to processes to enhance effective communication among caregivers and with patients to toolkits to help patients taking medications. The toolkits are available at http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/pips.

4. New Rural Health Information Technology Website Launched
-----------------------------

A new rural Health Information Technology Web-based resource center has launched with funding from the federal Office of Rural Health Policy. The goal of the new website is to assist with rural HIT education, identify and publicize rural HIT models, provide access to rural HIT information and help to develop tools, processes and other resources to support rural providers with HIT implementation. The rural HIT site will provide resources and support to rural hospitals as they transition from paper records to electronic health record technology. The website is available at http://www.ruralhit.org.

5. Rural Health Funding Opportunities

*** AMA Foundation Offers Support for Free Clinics***

Through the Healthy Communities/Healthy America program, the AMA Foundation awards $10,000-$25,000 grants to physician-led free clinics.  Grants will be awarded to free clinics that are requesting funds for specific projects; have regular and considerable operating hours (e.g. clinics that are open for more than just one day/week); have significant physician involvement and provide medical services. In 2008, the Foundation plans to award up to 20 grants of $10,000-$25,000. 

***Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students***

The purpose of this HRSA program is to provide financial assistance to disadvantaged health professions and nursing students. Institutions apply for SDS funds from the Department of Health and Human Services and are responsible for both selecting eligible recipients and determining their financial need. SDS funds awarded to schools must be used to award full or partial scholarship to eligible students enrolled in health professions programs on a full time basis.  

***Grants for the Integration of Schools and Mental Health Systems***

Funds will increase student access to high-quality mental health care by developing innovative approaches that link school systems with the local mental health system. Eligible applicants include: State educational agencies, local educational agencies (LEAs), including charter schools that are considered LEAs under State law, and Indian tribes. This program does not require cost sharing or matching.  An estimated 19 awards will be granted at an average of $250,000 each. 

***Health Center Expansion of Medical Capacity***

The purpose of this activity is to support the expansion of medical capacity at existing section 330 supported health center sites and significantly increase the number of people with access to comprehensive primary and preventive health care services. Strategies may include but are not limited to expanding existing primary care medical services, adding new medical providers, expanding hours of operations, or providing additional medical services through contractual relationships. Applicants are limited to section 330 funded health center grantees (i.e. Community Health Centers; Migrant Health Centers; Health Care for the Homeless; and Public Housing Primary Care).  $50 million is available to fund approximately 100 projects. 

***Computer Grants for HIV/AIDS Information***

The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of AIDS Research (OAR) are pleased to announce the 2008 Equal Access Initiative (EAI) Computer Grants Program. Qualified community-based organizations (CBOs) in the United States, its territories and possessions are invited to submit an application to receive one of 100 state-of-the-art desktop computers. Grantees will also receive a scholarship package to send one representative to participate in the Equal Access Initiative: HIV/AIDS Information Resources training from the National Library of Medicine.

*** HIV/AIDS Prevention Grants from the United States Conference of Mayors***

The United States Conference of Mayors (http://usmayors.org/), in cooperation with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and  Prevention, National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention  (http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp), has issued a Request for Proposals for the HIV/AIDS Prevention Grants Program to strengthen  local capacities to carry out effective HIV/AIDS prevention  activities. USCM plans to award grants totaling approximately $420,000 to local health departments, nonprofit community-based 501(c)(3)  organizations, and Native American tribes for the implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention projects targeting high-risk women of  color. Applicants must propose to conduct an individual- or community-level intervention that has been or can be shown to increase the adoption of safer behaviors and/or reduce the risk  of HIV transmission.
