1. DCH Releases Georgia Health Disparities Report

As part of its new Georgia Health Equity Initiative, the Department of Community Health has compiled a county-level look at health outcomes for minorities in the state. The report aims to provide health policy makers, health care advocates and communities with a picture of heath status indicators in their respective counties. This report is the first of its kind to focus solely on minority health outcomes for each of Georgia’s 159 counties. 2. CMS Publishes New Hospital Survey Results for Consumers
-----------------------------
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has published the results of the CAHPS Hospital Survey on its Hospital Compare Web site (www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov). The survey results, which are available for over 2,500 hospitals, will be updated every quarter. This new information about patients' experiences with hospital care is presented along with 26 process and outcome measures as well as a new set of volume and cost measures for elective procedures. These measures of quality and value are intended to help consumers and providers make more informed decisions about hospitals in their communities. 3. Meharry Hosts HIV Research
Conference

A conference on “Cultures in Context: HIV and Substance Abuse Research in the Southeast” will be held June 12-13, 2008 at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. This conference will address complex cultural features that influence HIV and substance abuse research, prevention, treatment and policy. Leading researchers in both biologic and behavioral prevention of HIV and substance abuse from across the country will present current data and strategies, with opportunities for discussion among colleagues and communities. 4. New Federal Report on Primary Care Supply Trends and Projections

A new report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office examines supply trends, projections, and valuation of services for primary care professionals. The report is available at http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d08472t.pdf.

The HRSA Patient Navigator (PN) demonstration program authorizes funds for the development and operation of demonstration projects to provide patient navigator services to improve health care outcomes for individuals with cancer or other chronic diseases, with a specific emphasis on health disparity populations. Award recipients are to use grant funds to recruit, assign, train and employ patient navigators who have direct knowledge of the communities they serve to facilitate the care of those who are at risk for or who have cancer or other chronic diseases, including conducting outreach to health disparity populations.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing is a scholarship program to help alleviate the nursing shortage and increase the diversity of nursing professionals. Through grants to schools of nursing, the program will provide scholarships to college graduates without nursing degrees who are enrolled in accelerated baccalaureate and master's nursing programs.

CVS has two funding priorities: 1) children with disabilities: grants support programs that promote independence among children with disabilities including physical and occupational therapies, speech and hearing therapies, assistive technology and recreational therapies. 2) healthcare service for uninsured people: the CVS Caremark Community Grants Program assures that more uninsured people receive needed care that the care received is of higher quality, and that the uninsured are served by providers who participate in accountable community healthcare programs.
